Description

An assassin’s bullet and a case of mistaken identity send Mercy Maddox back to the year 1838, to Butler Island, a sprawling rice plantation on a remote sea island off the coast of Georgia. While struggling to adapt to the time slide, Mercy must also cope with the nightmare of an Antebellum plantation. There, she gets involved in a ruse to impersonate the famous actress Fanny Kemble Butler in a plot to foil the Reverse Underground Railroad–the monstrous practice of kidnapping free people of color in the North and selling them South during the rise of King Cotton. Mercy also meets Jayda, Fanny’s enslaved personal attendant. What starts as a powerful attraction between Mercy and Jayda blossoms into a love that endures both the savagery of the times and the span of two centuries–a love with the power to bring Mercy home again.
